About this role

What will you be responsible for?
Environmental Director would provide strategic direction, teamwork and deployment for Newmont’s water, biodiversity, tailings (environment) and waste rock standards. They would support establishing and implementing policy, standards, mentorship, and lessons learned in the environmental field. He or she will also act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to provide support to the regions and sites
In addition, this person would support integration of risk and performance into target setting and long-term planning, support due diligence and projects (full potential, 3Rs). They would also learn, demonstrate, and share global leading practices innovation and trends as well as mange global partnerships, memberships and collaborations. This incumbent would support internal communication and reporting (executives, board and other functions) as well as global working groups.

In this role you will

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:

  • We direct and lead all aspects of the global water strategy including collaborating with TS, WSC and site water coordinators. We support the development and implementation of objectives and targets to align with the strategy. We work to develop objectives for water that align with climate ambition of net zero.
  • We support data management of water data (through WAFs, dashboards and site water balances)
  • We complete reporting for general environment, water, biodiversity, tailings and waste management for ASM, DJSI, CDP. We support information from investors/analysts on environmental data and performance.
  • We collaborate with business planning and VA on project development, requirements for study-stage and ensuring the project teams are meeting requirements of standards.
  • We collaborate with others through global partnerships (IUCN, ICMM, WRI).
  • We support sites in the implementation of meeting NNL dedication for Biodiversity. We develop metrics for supervising progress and evaluating future objectives for nature that align with climate ambition of net zero.
  • We lead the development of external reporting – TCFD, Sustainability report, CDP
  • We serve as a SME in the areas of water, biodiversity, tailings and waste rock. Support project team in meeting requirements of permits.
  • We work in collaboration with the Corporate Global Tailings Team for implementation of the GISTM. This includes focus on the environmental aspects (emergency management, disclosures, EMS systems).

  • Strong data management and project management skills
  • Understanding of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) requirements as well as DJSI, CDP and TCFD
  • Global awareness of SER and how it applies to mining industry
  • Validated experience in cross-functional collaboration and the ability to work with internal and external partners
  • Broad business knowledge and focus with the ability to recognize issues, problems and capitalize on opportunities.
  • Attention to details and ability achieve and handle deadlines and priorities.
  • Have an intimate knowledge of environmental protection relative to unit processes in all aspects of mining.
  • Must understand the mining business such that mining activities can be translated and communicated to lay persons.
  • Strong discernment to propose environmental programs.
  • Ability to assist in development of environmental strategies in the context of overall project and country strategies that allow the mining business to be successful while protecting the environment and mitigating environmental risk.
  • Knowledge of site water management – preference for skills in developing site water management plans, and water balances.
  • Understanding of development of emergency response and dam inundation mapping for tailings or other dams. Including knowledge of partner engagement, training and exercises.
  • Validated experience with developing environmental baseline studies (biodiversity and other) and environmental impact studies or other environmental permitting.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.


  • Bachelor’s Degree is required, masters if preferred.
  • 12+ years experience in the environmental space, with at least 6 years of experience in applying environmental programs to extractive industry operations.
  • A degree in Environmental Science or a technical mining related field (civil engineering, geology, mining or metallurgy) or equivalent experience. Experience in developing countries preferred.
  • Experience in the design, construction and operations related to water management, tailings, closure, and biodiversity management and tracking.
  • Experience in cyanide and mercury management and disposal (if possible).

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent project management, written communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to support executives in communication of ESG reporting in external messaging and communications.
  • Strong analytical skills to be able to gather, interpret and collate information for reporting
  • Ability to mentor, coach and direct working groups.

Working conditions & location

Where you will be located!

  • The position is located in the Denver corporate office.
  • Position may be required to travel to, and assist other domestic and international sites, up to 20%

The salary range offered for this role is $148,160 to 194,460. The salary range is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience. The salary offer will not be based on a candidate’s salary history at other jobs, and by law, Newmont will not seek information about salary history, and candidates should not share such information with Newmont.

This role will be eligible for participation in a discretionary annual bonus program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company’s performance and their own individual performance. This role also will be eligible for participation in a discretionary long-term incentive program, pursuant to which an employee may receive awards based on their level and individual performance.
