Job description: When you join Verizon

Verizon is a leading provider of technology, communications, information and entertainment products, transforming the way we connect across the globe. We’re a diverse network of people driven by our ambition and united in our shared purpose to shape a better future. Here, we have the ability to learn and grow at the speed of technology, and the space to create within every role. Together, we are moving the world forward – and you can too. Dream it. Build it. Do it here.

What you’ll be doing…

Verizon New Business Incubation (NBI) is looking for the Galadriel or Elrond (although we’ll settle for a Celeborn) of software engineering to join us as our Chief Software Engineer. This role will help guide our multidisciplinary engineering team in developing and delivering cutting edge automation technologies to our customers via our industry leading 5G network. Reporting directly to the CTO of NBI, you will be responsible for the design of our implementation strategy: how we will deliver a market-hardened SaaS solution for our ecosystem of platforms, services, and applications that drives efficiency, scalability, reliability, and security for both our internal and external customers. We are looking for a technical innovator with strong product instincts and a collaborative, empathetic approach to their work. You will drive alignment across a diverse array of perspectives, and be comfortable working with the CTO to execute a business-oriented technology strategy that drives customer satisfaction and enables exponential revenue growth.

  • Work with technical and business leadership to gain a detailed understanding of our target markets, key revenue opportunities, and upcoming products.
  • Leverage the above understanding in collaboration with our Chief Architect to convert our technical strategy to production-quality code that is capable of delivering shared services, templates, and tooling to a variety of engineering teams developing on the core platform.
  • Lead the creation of our software development approach, guidelines, and general frameworks, ensuring we are developing for both speed, scale and security, making the right technical investments, trade-offs, and implementation decisions.
  • Provide advice and strategic guidance to R&D teams to help shape their design choices to balance the critical needs for speed-to-market and scalability.
  • Help lead the technical due diligence and post-merger integrations of new companies joining the NBI family.
  • Work with CTO, Chief Architect and CISO to design and implement a security posture that enables innovative engineering solutions while protecting our valuable data.
  • Lead the implementation of threat mitigation and response strategies, with specific focuses on ransomware, upstream and downstream attack vectors.
  • Build, train, and develop a team of high-performing developers and engineers that can deliver hardened, scalable software at speed.

What we’re looking for…

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Six or more years of experience owning software development for an IoT-focused product.
  • Six or more years of experience designing, building and shipping large-scale distributed software services and solutions.
  • Six or more years of experience building, mentoring, and leading high-accountability, high-performing software development teams.
  • Knowledge of multi-platform, microservices, and event-driven architecture.
  • Knowledge of DevSecOps, including CI/CD automation, Infrastructure as Code, and threat mitigation and response, with an emphasis on ransomware attacks.

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • Demonstrated expertise in software-defined networking for IoT, including Northbound/Southbound interfaces.
  • Demonstrated understanding of robotics and/or edge computing.
  • Broad technical skills and understanding of full stack cloud applications, high performance compute, data analytics, and data security + governance models.
  • Willingness to lead by example, a dedication to alignment and harmony, and a proven ability to influence both senior executives and independent project teams with competing interests to achieve consensus.
  • Deep understanding of machine learning and artificial intelligence.
