Position Summary
Our Business Analyst (BA) will be a strategic thinker with a passion for identifying opportunities for improvement within technology and business domains. The selected individual will be unique and genuine, as is our culture.

The Office of Information Technology’s Business Analysis Team resides within the Planning, Strategy and Analysis Division (PSA). We partner with schools and colleges, administrative units, and technical service providers to bring forth an in-depth understanding of their business strategies, processes, and technical needs. Our work helps shepherd our partners to the best possible outcomes and solutions. The Business Analyst (BA) is an unclassified administrative position that performs full performance professional level analytic work requiring skill in business process elicitation, documentation, and diplomacy. The BA performs detailed business analysis to formulate business requirements and identify, investigate, and recommend innovative technical capabilities that improve business efficiencies and the customer experience.

This position works with functional teams to ensure the design and development of technology solutions, and alignment with project needs, to fulfill all business requirements and achieves objectives and goals. Work is performed under supervision and performance is based on the effective outcome of projects and engagements. The performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system and in accordance with the University Policies & Procedures.

Jobs in this career family develop, maintain, and support computer systems, software and networks. Functions include enterprise operations, distributed computing, academic computing, research computing, computer hardware and software management, computer networking, telecommunications, systems development, database administration, server administration, website management, programming, desktop support, and help desk operations.

Professionals at the intermediate level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. At the intermediate level, duties may be more limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Utilize the results of business analysis to document technical and functional requirements of automated business applications.
  • Analyze, facilitate, model, and organize information in order to reconcile conflicts, elicit requirements and distinguish solution ideas from business needs.
  • Be a technical resource and provide systematic solutions while working with departmental staff and our Project Management Team.
  • Partner with end users and system developers, translating for both parties, helping diverse thinkers develop the smartest and most useful solutions.
  • Conduct interviews with technical teams and business service owners to gather full spectrum range of needs (including problem statements, and technical / functional requirements).
  • Responsible for writing technical specifications (for custom development, system integration, etc.) based on interactions directly with the customer.
  • Deliverables and output range from deep technical documentation to executive level presentations.
  • Assist in business Change Management activities.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $54,095 – $76,687.56 and is commensurate with skills and experience. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Conditions of Employment:

This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule of remote work (locally) and on-campus work.

Must be willing and able to travel between campuses (Denver Campus and Anschutz Medical Campus)

This position may require some occasional weekend and evening assignments as well as occasional availability during off-hours for participation in both scheduled and unscheduled activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of four years of college with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college with major emphasis in Business Administration, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related field is required.
  • Substitution: 4 years of professional or high-level technical experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of 2+ years of progressively responsible experience in the field of business analysis (as functional, process, data or business analyst) is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Business analysis experience within a governmental or higher education institution is desired.
  • Experience in an Information Technology organization in an infrastructure, development, systems or project management role.
  • Professional certification in Business Analysis.
  • Certification in Six Sigma or LEAN (Black Belt).
  • 3+ years of experience in Access, Excel(Advanced), Visio, and MS Project.
  • 3+ years of customer interfacing experience – project oversight, customer presentation.
  • Create data storytelling models and think strategically for a growing department.
  • Ability to write and present a detailed analytical report to executive stakeholders.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellence in providing customer service, top-notch technical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal relationships, client engagement, and decision-making abilities.
  • Proven experience developing requirements documentation including stakeholder analysis, business requirements, functional specifications, user stories, use cases, storyboards, business process flow diagrams and test plans.
  • Ability to build awareness of the opinions and attitudes of your audience to drive analytical workflows and pivot as needed to meet customer expectations.
  • Experience with LEAN business models and A3 business processes.
  • Experience working with multiple units and/or organizations, building relationships within highly collaborative projects.
  • Sharp conflict resolutions skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective professional working relations with peers, colleagues, associates, administrative staff members, faculty, and with personnel of external agencies and organizations.
  • Strong communication skills, including prioritizing, problem solving and interpersonal relationship building.
  • Proven time management / organization skills (must be able to prioritize workload and meet deadlines).
